714,284. Reforming hydrocarbon gases. GALOCSY, Z. DE. Feb. 5, 1952 [Feb. 9, 1951], No. 3062/52. Class 55 (2) A two-step process for the treatment of hydrocarbon gases to render them suitable for use as synthesis or hydrogenation gases or as town's gas comprises burning a primary gas in air, oxygenenriched air or oxygen, the combustion products then being used to reform the hydrocarbon gas to obtain a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen. In the first step of the process, a gas, e.g. a part of the gas to be treated or a part of the final reformed gas, is burnt in air or oxygen, the maximum temperature in the combustion vessel being limited to about 2000‹ C. by adding preheated steam or carbon dioxide to the gas to be burnt. In the second step, which may be conducted under pressure, the hot combustion products meet the preheated hydrocarbon gas, the steam, carbon dioxide and any excess oxygen present in the combustion products reacting with the hydrocarbons to give a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen. If the sensible heat of the products is insufficient for the endothermic reforming reactions, the reforming vessel may be externally heated, e.g. electrically. To reduce the reacting temperature, the reforming vessel may be lined with a catalyst or may contain a fluidized bed of catalytic material. When the reformed gas is to be used for synthesis or hydrogenation purposes or for the production of a non-toxic town's gas, it is reacted with steam in the presence of an iron catalyst to remove its carbon monoxide content. For example, to produce a town's gas, a natural gas containing 2 per cent of C0 2 , 4 per cent of N, and 94 per cent of CH 4 was reformed with combustion products made by burning this gas, to give a gas containing 1.9 per cent of C0 2 ; 21.4 per cent of CO ; 64.6 per cent of H 2 and 12.1 per cent of N 2 , After conversion with steam, removal by washing of part of the CO 2 formed and addition of methane to raise the calorific value, the final gas has a composition of 6.0 per cent of C0 2 ; 1 per cent of CO ; 55.6 per cent of H 2 ; 26 per cent of CH 4 and 11.4 per cent of N,.
