Abstract

714,033. Polishing optical surfaces. ANGENIEUX, P. Nov. 14, 1952 [Nov. 17, 1951], No. 28745/52. Class 60 A machine for polishing curved optical surfaces comprises a concave spherical element 1, and a convex spherical element 2, each of which is rotatably mounted about its axis of symmetry which passes through the centre of curvature 19 common to both elements, an arm 10 mounted to oscillate about a shaft 9 and to carry the element 2, means to oscillate the arm, and means utilizing such oscillatory motion for rotating the element 2. When convex surfaces are to be polished the element 1 forms the tool and the element 2 the work holder. With concave surfaces the functions of the elements are reversed. The arm 10 is oscillated about the axis of the shaft 9 by a crank disc 12 and a link 11 adjustably connected by a trunnion 21 to a bracket member 10 to enable the amplitude of oscillation to be varied. The shaft 9 is connected by toothed or friction wheels 16, 17 with the element 2 and may be held against rotation so that this element will receive an alternating rotary motion about its axis of symmetry in consequence of its oscillation about the axis of the shaft 9, or it may be rotated so that the element 2 will receive either an alternating or unidirectional variablespeed drive according to its angular velocity. A nut 20 enables the position of the element 2 to be adjusted in relation to the axis of oscillation. The polishing tool may be loaded by a weight 18 or by a spring. The machine may be inclined to the vertical.
