713,659. Arched roofs. SEFTON, W. Oct. 27, 1952 [July 26, 1951], No. 17748/51. Class 20 (4) A method of constructing an arched roof comprises erecting and assembling precast concrete sections 1 of shell thickness, i.e. up to 3 inches, side-by-side on temporary beams 2 supported on columns 3, finally incorporated in the walls at each side of the building to be roofed, and passing wires 6 through preformed aligned holes 5 in the sections 1, the wires 6 being tensioned to pre-stress the concrete, after which the beams 2 are removed and the holes 5 are grouted. The sections 1 are cast in shuttering on the ground and are raised on to the beams 2 by a cradle 4 having eyes 4a which can be engaged by a crane. This method enables reinforcing steel to be eliminated, the only reinforcement, other than the wires 6, being a fine mesh which is included to prevent surface erazing. Each end, and certain intermediate, sections may be formed with thickened ribs 1a.
