Abstract

Plasticizers suitable for use with synthetic resins such as ethyl cellulose, nitrocellulose and the polyvinyl chloride type of resin consist of mixed polyethylene glycol esters of a mixture of fatty acids having the following composition by weight:- Caprylic acid 80.5-92 per cent. Capric acid 5-15 per cent. Caproic acid 0.8-3 per cent. Lauric acid 0.1-1.5 per cent. The plasticizers may be used with the straight polyvinyl chloride and copolymers thereof with minor amounts of vinyl esters, e.g. with a resinous composition consisting of 100 parts of the copolymer of vinyl chloride and acetate with 2 parts of basic lead carbonate. They may also be used with nitrile rubbers, polyvinyl butyral, cumarone and other resinous materials. Preferably the plasticizer is used in amounts less than 50 per cent. of the synthetic resins. In the examples mixtures of acids having the above constitution are esterified with a mixture of triethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol to give plasticizers for synthetic resins.ALSO:A plasticizer for synthetic resins consists of the substantially neutral mixed polyethylene glycol esters of a mixture of fatty acids having the following composition by weight: caprylic acid 80.5-92 per cent, capric acid 5-15 per cent, caproic acid 0.8-3 per cent, lauric acid 0.1-1.5 per cent. "Neutral" esters are those in which the hydroxy groups are completely esterified. Mixtures of acids having a composition lying within the above limits are esterified with polyethylene glycols such as diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol or mixtures of these. In the examples, mixtures of polyethylene glycols having the composition: trimethylene glycol 75-95 per cent, diethylene glycol 4-20 per cent, polyethylene glycol 1-5 per cent are used to esterify mixtures of acids as defined above.
