Abstract

713,230. Liquid or gas fuel burners. BOLLIGER, H. June 16, 1952 [June 19, 1951], No. 15039/52 Class 75 (1) A liquid-or-gas-fuel burner has an annular gas burner nozzle 10 which is surrounded by a cylindrical casing 3, 4 and 6 to which air is supplied through tangentially arranged inlets 1, 2 in order to impart a rotary motion to the air supplied thereto and the forward end 6 of which is conical so as to guide the air at a high speed around the annular nozzle 10 in order to effect a reduction in pressure around the annular outlet slit 16 in the gas nozzle 10 and in the internal space 57 thereof. Gas is supplied to the nozzle 10 through tangentially arranged ducts 13, 14. A liquid fuel nozzle 17 projects through an opening 5 in the rear wall 4 of the casing and is fed with liquid fuel through a pipe 19. An atomizing fluid such as compressed air or steam is fed to the nozzle 17 from a pipe 25 through a heater 22 arranged in the combustion zone and a pipe 20. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, liquid fuel under pressure is fed to a chamber 47 in the nozzle 17 and exerts a pressure on a spring loaded bellows 44 to move a rod 39 so as to open a fuel outlet orifice 36. Helical grooves 38 formed in a collar 37 mounted on the rod 39 impart a whirling motion to the liquid fuel. The atomizing fluid fed through a passage 33 to an outlet orifice 54 has a whirling motion imparted thereto by helical slot 30 formed in a flange 31 carried by a nozzle head 29. The rod 39, biased to the closed position by a spring 50, is prevented from completely closing the orifice 36 by means of a, collar 49 mounted on a screwed tail 43. The pipes 1, 2, 13 and 14 and the slot 38 and 30 are all disposed in the same direction of rotation. The movement of the rod 39 may be effected mechanically by means of levers, screws or the like connected with an automatic controlling device or manually when the fuel pressure remains constant. The bellows 44 may be replaced by a diaphragm. The heater 22 may be formed of helically or spirally wound tubes.
