Abstract
An apparatus for detecting, or measuring the concentration of, a gas in a gas mixture compises a thermal diffusion column, means for feeding the gas mixture across one level of the column, a gas detection or concentration measuring device coupled at another level in the column and means for feeding the gas at said other level through the detection or measuring device. In the preferred apparatus shown in the Figure and designed for detecting a heavier gas in a mixture (e.g. an organic vapour in oxygen) the column 4 is in the form of concentric tubes whereby an annular diffusion space is formed. Gas from the pipe 1 enters this space through conduit 2 due to the convection current set up by electrical heating coil 8 about the exit conduit 3. It passes through a wire gauze 19 in order to avoid interference with the diffusion circulation set up in the column by means of the cooling jacket 15 surrounding the outer wall 12 and electric heating element 17 within the inner wall 13. The heavier component is concentrated in the lower part of the column and detected by means of the detector 7 which may be a katharometer. It is drawn through said detector by means of convection due to heating coil 10. According to the Provisional Specification the pressure is maintained constant by means of a valve in the pipe 1. The inner wall is "optimized" to the gas constants (viscosity, density, temperature) by means of steps and centred by three screws (one shown), 21. Thermocouples 22 and 23 indicate the temperature of the walls. If the apparatus of the invention is to be used with a contaminant lighter than the main gas, the mixture is fed <PICT:0712698/III/1> in at the bottom level and detected at the top, in the case of two impurities of which one is lighter and one heavier than the gas, the mixture is fed to the central portion of the column and the p impurities detected at each end. Applications are mentioned.
