Abstract

712,662. Lubricating. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. May 26, 1952 [May 26, 1951], No. 13229/52. Class 12(3) [Also in Group VII] A sewing machine comprises a reservoir for lubricant and a rotary disc arranged to project into the lubricant and upon rotation to sling it into a conduit rising from the reservoir and through which the lubricant passes to an elevated lubricant compartment for supply of lubricant to certain working parts of the machine. As shown, a base 30. Figs. 1 and 10, has a compartment 49 containing oil 50. Extending through the base is a rotary shaft 60 to which is attached a combined handwheel and pulley 71. The shaft 60 carries a pulley 72 connected by a belt 80 to a pulley 78 on a rotary shaft 75 which extends through an overhanging arm 32. A disc 178, which may be formed with peripheral notches, is mounted on the shaft 60 to be partly immersed in the oil 50 and a marginal part of the disc registers with a slot in a conduit 166. As the disc rotates oil is forced up the conduit to a compartment 40 in the arm 32 and is deposited on a wicking 181, excess oil being returned to the reservoir by a conduit 182. The oil on the wicking 181 is distributed by wicking 183 to shaft bearing 76, by wicking in a conduit 184 to operative parts within the needle head 33, and by wicking 185 to shaft bearing 77. A felt pad 187 at the bottom of the needle head absorbs excess oil. The compartment 40 may be in the form of an annular compartment completely enclosed and communicating at the bottom with the conduit 182. Wicking 194 which dips into the oil 50 conveys-oil to passages leading to shaft 60 and bearing 66. Wicking also conveys oil through a wall 45 of the base to a ball stud 119 which forms part of the mechanism for operating an oscillatable looper 11. The mechanism is located above a portion 42 of the base 30 which is formed with passages communicating with the oil in the compartment 49. Parts of the mechanism are lubricated by wicking in conduits 216, 217, 218 which communicate with these passages. One of the passages 200, Fig. 12, enables oil to reach wicking 206 for oiling one of the bearings that support a shaft 148 for use in operating work-feeding mechanism. Similar wicking is provided for the other bearing. Wicking 211 conveys oil to certain wear-receiving parts. Wicking 215 conveys oil to a bearing sleeve of the shaft 60. Excess oil falls into a sump 220 passes through a filter 224 and along a channel 221 to a suction pump 230 comprising a vertical rotor with a helical peripheral groove, which returns the oil to the compartment 49. The level of oil may be ascertained by means of a gauge which is preferably similar to that described in U.S.A. Specification 2,301,460, and comprises a rod made of polymerized methyl methacrylate.
