Abstract
712,292. Automatic gain control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 29, 1952 [March 24, 1951], No. 5370/52. Class 40 (5) In a television receiver for signals of the negatively-modulated type an automatic gain control (A.G.C.) voltage is derived as the sum of two voltages, the first of which is proportional to the mean value of the rectified I.F. signal and the second to the difference between the peak and mean values of the rectified video-frequency signal. The signal detector 2 is direct-coupled to a video-frequency amplifier . 6 which modulates the cathode of the picture tub'e 8. A negative going voltage proportional to the mean value of the demodulated signal is obtained by means of a resistance-condenser combination 4, 5 and appears across the condenser 5. The signal applied to the cathode of the tube 8 is also applied to the grid of a synch-separator valve 11 via blocking condenser 9: the valve 11 operates by virtue of grid-leak bias, a series grid resistance 12 also being provided to improve the elimination of noise impulses. A voltage proportional to the difference between the peak and mean values of the composite video-frequency 'signal is obtained from the grid of the valve 11, by means of resistance-condenser combination 14, 5. This voltage appears across condenser 5, being added to the first component of A.G.C. voltage ; resistances 14, 4 provide a voltage divider whereby the correct proportion of the second component of A.G.C. voltage is added in. By deriving the A.G.C. voltage in this manner, the effect of noise impulses upon the control is minimized.
