Abstract

The Specification describes the preparation of radio-active methyl bromide, used for detecting leaks in gas-filled cables. Potassium bromide is irradiated with neutrons in an atomic pile and made into a slightly alkaline solution with water. The free bromine produced by the irradiation is then neutralized with H2S as described in a paper by Szilard and Chalmers. ("Nature" 1934, Volume 134, page 462.) Sulphuric acid is then added to the solution and technical methyl sulphate, the mixture then being heated so that methyl bromide is given off. This gas is freed from water in a refrigerant and dried in a sulphuric acid bubbler and a potassium hydroxide tube.
