Abstract
712,124. Transformers and inductors. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Nov. 18, 1952 [Sept. 27, 1951], No. 22620/51. Class 38(2) A transformer or inductor whose loss over a given frequency band or attenuation-frequency characteristic can be varied, comprises a core having one or more limbs 1 carrying the main windings 6, 9, a limb 3 carrying a winding 12 which forms or supplies a subsidiary load, and a saturable limb 2 which shorts limb 3. Direct current is passed through a main or other winding on limb 1, producing a flux in limb' 2 which saturates to a controlled extent, and the main flux is proportionately diverted to limb 3, where it induces voltage in windings 12. Thus the loss in the transformer is varied by changes in the D.C. and each value of D.C. gives a corresponding attenuation - frequency characteristic. The D.C. may be replaced by a permanent magnet. A transformer according to the invention may be used in a telephone system as described in Specification 712,123, [Group XXXIX].
