712,079. Chucks. PASTORI, V. Sept. 22, 1952 [Sept 22, 1951], No. 23763/52. Class 83 (3) A scroll-plate chuck has a casing 6, 19, rigidly fixed to the machine tool, and a central member 1 and scroll plate 3 rotatable in the casing on ball bearings 7, 15, the central member being connected to the machine spindle. A pair of diametrically-opposite spindles 11 on an annular ring 5 each carry a pair of planet pinions 9, 10, the pinions 9 meshing with teeth 4 on the scroll plate and with a fixed sunwheel 12 and the pinions 10 meshing with teeth 8 on the central member 1 and with a sunwheel 13 which is adjustable by a hand lever, (not shown), and worm gearing 16, 14. On rotation of the central member 1, and with it the jaw-carrying member 2, the planet pinions rotate on their spindles and also round the chuck axis, thus rotating the scroll-plate at the same speed as the machine spindle but adjustment of the jaws can be made during rotation of the chuck by rotating the sunwheel 13 one way or the other by the hand lever. The spindles 11 have lubricating ports 18 and carry the pinions by loose rings which also have lubricating ports and are preferably made of nitrided steel. Ducts such as 17, 23, 24 and 25 are provided for lubricating other parts and felt packings 21 ensure oil tightness.
