Classes 145 (1) and 145 (2) A tool for dressing or profiling the edges of furniture or rabbets in doors and windows or for forming slots or rabbets comprises a hand grip 2 on a base plate 1 having slip surfaces 3, 4, 5 which rest on the work, a cutter spindle 8 driven by an electric motor 7 mounted for vertical adjustment in a lateral extension 6 of the base plate and a feeler 11 adjustably mounted in the extension 6. The motor has a threaded neck 9 engaging a slotted threaded clamp portion of the extension 6 and the feeler is laterally adjustable by screw means in a holder 12 which is vertically adjustable on the extension 6 and is clamped by a nut 15 on a screw to which is fixed a second hand-grip 16. Fig. 8 shows the tool fitted with a profiled cutter 24 for rounding off the edge of a glued-on part 23 of a slab 22 and with a saw 25 for trimming off the bottom of the part 23, the feeler 11 bearing on the part 23 and having a hole to accommodate the spindle 8; alternatively the saw may be replaced by another cutter 24, if both edges are to be rounded off, or the feeler may be below the cutter and bear on the edge of a slab to which the work piece is clamped. The feeler may be a plain straight rule or have a semi-circular end corresponding to the minimum cutting diameter of the cutter so that swinging of the tool does not affect the cut; also, with a semi-circular end to the faeler, the tool can be taken round a right-angled corner b, Fig. 3, and, to assist in this, the slip surface 3 is set back by an amount s in the direction opposite to the direction of advance D. Holes 26 are provided in the slip surfaces for fitting a larger slide plate 27 (Fig. 9) or a plate by means of which the tool can be clamped to a bench in an inverted position. For rabbeting, the feeler may be fitted in the position 32, Fig. 9, if it is required merely to plane down the rabbet, or in the position 32a if the rabbet is to be cut from solid. The tool may also be used to cut a dovetail slot 37.
