711,808. Photographic diazotype, layers and photomechanical printing plates. KALLE & CO., AKT.-GES. Aug. 2, 1951 [Aug. 4, 1950], No. 18340/51. Addition to 699,413. Class 98(2) A plate having a layer containing a lightsensitive water-insoluble ester or amide of a sulphonic or carboxylic acid bf an ortho-diazophenol of the benzene series is exposed to light under a (positive) original and developed to cause the diazo compound unacted upon by light to form an azo dye by coupling with an azo coupling component, areas of such dye having the property of accepting greasy ink. The coupling component may be already present in the layer, in which case the plate with the layer is itself claimed in the invention, and development may be effected with alkali, ammonia may be used but is followed by treatment with an aqueous alkaline solution to produce the printing plate; or the coupling component may be present in the alkaline solution, or may be produced from, the lightsensitive diazo compound by a short exposure to light without an original prior to or during development. Particular diazo compounds for use in the invention are described in Specification 708,834. In eleven specific examples the sensitive layer is always provided on an aluminium plate or foil, thus in Example 1 the diazo compound from 2-amino-1-hydroxybenzene-4-[N : N- diphenyl] sulphonamide, designated as 2-diazophenol-(1)-4 [N : N-diphenyl]-sulphonamide or as o-quinone-diazide-(2)-4-[N : N-diphenyl]-sulphonamide, together with a phenol-formaldehyde resin and phloroglucinol dissolved in glycol monomethyl ether are whirl-coated on to a mechanically grained aluminium plate, dried by hot air, and the coating is exposed under an original and developed with ammonia gas to give an image of deep, brown colour; treatment with trisodium phosphate solution and subsequently with phosphoric acid renders the plate ready for printing.
