Abstract
711,753. Ventilating tropical buildings. KLEINHENN, P. V. May 19, 1952, No. 12560/52. Classes 20 (1) and 137 A tropical house, or the like, constructed to provide improved ventilation, includes an overhanging roof I having a chimney-like air outlet 2, an attic, or roof space, sealed except for ceiling apertures 7 and the outlet 2, and fresh air inlets 9 in, or near, the floor, the roof space and the chimney being covered with glass, or with thin metal sheeting, to transfer to the roof space heat from the sun in order to heat the air therein so that it rises through the chimney 2 and is replaced by fresh air drawn into and through the rooms 6. When metal is used for the roof it is painted on the outside and inside with heat absorbing and radiating colours respectively, a grid arrangement of metal bars and wooden rafters being used to support the roofing. The walls of the houses should preferably be made of concrete, or stone blocks, or bricks, and the ceiling of concrete slabs to ensure that a certain amount of heat is accumulated during the day time to maintain the ventilation effect after sunset. A large baffle plate 5, placed a short distance above a layer of sand 14 on the attic floor and having an insulated trap door, on portion 8, above the opening 7, deflects the air drawn from the rooms over the whole area of the roof, the baffle plate being painted with dark colours to absorb heat which is used to heat the outflowing air. A free space 10 under the floor communicates with a space between the building walls and a vertical heat insulating outer wall 11, the latter having light and air openings 12. Grooves 13 under the eaves present reflecting surfaces which prevent the heat rays, reflected from the ground, from entering windows 6a. A tray 3 beneath the chimney 2 collects rain which may enter the chimney. Where it is required to modify an existing building, the fresh air inlets to the rooms are provided adjacent the floor in the walls, the fresh air travelling diagonally across the rooms to a hall, or corridor, before entering the roof. If it is desired to increase the draught effect heating devices may be placed in the attic, or in a room specially reserved for this purpose, or alternatively, ventilation may be installed inside the chimney extension.
