Class 98(2) In a silver dye-bleach process in which a silver halide photographic emulsion containing a dye and a developed silver image is treated with a bleach bath which bleaches the dye in situ with the developed silver image, providing a positive image in residual dye, the bleach bath contains, as accelerating compound, cinnoline or a derivative thereof substituted in one or more of the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 positions (e.g. 4-methyl-, 4-ethoxy-, 4-phenoxy-, and 6-bromo-4-methyl-cinnoline), and 'may also contain sulphuric or hydrochloric acid and thiourea or pyridine. In example 1, an aqueous solution of " Solophenyl Blue Green BL 250 per cent " and sodium dodecyl sulphate is added to a silver iodobromide emulsion, which is then coated on a film support. The exposed material is developed, fixed, and hardened in aqueous formaldehyde solution, the dye is imagewise bleached in an aqueous solution of potassium iodide, pyridine, sodium hypophosphite, sulphuric acid, and 4-methylcinnoline, and the developed silver is bleached in an aqueous solution of copper sulphate, sodium chloride, and hydrochloric acid, and removed by fixing. The hardening step may be omitted if the emulsion is hardened or is provided with a hardened gelatin supercoat. In examples 2 to 4, the dye-bleaching baths are aqueous solutions of (2) hydrochloric acid, methanol, sodium chloride, thiourea, and 4-methylcinnoline; (3) sulphuric acid, potassium bromide, and 4-methylcinnoline; and (4) hydrochloric acid, potassium bromide, and cinnoline hydrochloride.
