Abstract
In a process for the continuous extraction of soluble material and crushed vegetable substances, especially sugar beet shreds and sugar cane, in a single column upright diffusion tower, in which the material to be treated is conveyed from the bottom to the top of the tower by a worm and the extraction liquor is conveyed in a counter stream, the rate of speed of material to the tower is so regulated that the treatment time during which the material is in contact with the liquor is not more than 50 and not less 20 minutes, and in that the amount of extract withdrawn from the tower in relation to the shred weight is not more than 120 per cent and not less than 90 per cent. The sugar beet shreds may be mashed without the addition of diffiusion juice or with a quantity of juice not more than 50 per cent by weight of the shreds being treated. Specification 708,058 is referred to.
