Class 60 Apparatus for buffing a tyre prior to retreading comprises a turntable 2, Fig. 1, rotatable about a vertical axis on a base 1, a standard 6 on the turntable carrying means for mounting a tyre 19 for rotation about a horizontal axis, at least one buffing wheel which is mounted on pedestal 81 movable to and from the tyre and is positionable in a vertical plane passing through the axial centres of the turntable and pedestal and. containing the central plane of the tyre, and means for periodically determining the width of the crown surface of the tyre consisting of a pair of gauges which are simultaneously slidable in opposite directions on a guide arm 129 carried from the standard 6 so that their gauging edges are always disposed on opposite sides of, and equidistant from, the said vertical plane. The invention is described as applied to a machine which is constructed similarly to that of Specification 692,434, apart from the addition of the gauging means. Generally, the machine comprises a shaft 17, Fig. 1, which carries the tyre 19 and is mounted, together with its driving mechanism, on a slide 11 adjustable horizontally on a block 9 adapted to be fixed in desired vertical position on the standard 6. The pedestal 81 is rotatably mounted on a slide 70 movable on guides 69 to and from the tyre, and a platform 82 carried by the pedestal supports a shaft which mounts a coarse buffing wheel 95 and fine buffing wheel 96 and is driven from a motor. The shaft is movable axially to position either wheel for operation on the tyre; the'crown surface of the tyre is buffed to arcuate form by the wheel 95 while the turntable 2 is oscillated about its central axis, and the side edges of the tyre are buffed by the wheel 96 after the turntable 2, pedestal 81 and slide 70 have been locked in their desired positions. Gauging means. The guide arm 129 extends from a bracket 134, Fig. 4, which is adjustable vertically on a post 130 carried from the slide 11. The gauge elements 127, 128 are formed with reversely-threaded nuts 139 engaging the corresponding parts of a screwed rod 140 which is journalled on the arm for rotation by a gear 143 meshing with a gear 142 fixed centrally on the rod 140. Rotation of the rod causes the elements 127, 128 to move simultaneously towards or away from each other so as to set their gauge edges 137, 138 to the desired width of tread to be buffed. This width is indicated on a scale 145 carried by the element 127, and a scale on the post 130 enables a direct reading to be obtained of the diameter of the tyre.
