In a hose reel b mounted on a hollow trunnion c carried in a bracket d fixed to a wall, and wherein water is supplied to a hose a through the bracket which is connected to a water supply by a pipe f under the control of a screw-down valve g, a non-return valve l is disposed between the valve g and the reel b. The valve may have a fluted stem n and a coned head and be held in engagement with a seating by the force of gravity.
