Class 40 (3) In a device for deenergizing a relay 12 in the anode circuit of a thermionic valve 8 when a photoelectric cell 10 receives a certain light intensity, the grid of the valve, which is A.C. fed from a transformer 1, receives during those half cycles when its anode is positive with respect to its cathode a positive voltage from adjustable resistor 4 and a negative voltage produced by charging a condenser 6 through photocell 10 during the previous half cycle. Thus a particular value of illumination will hold valve 8 blocked during its positive half cycle and relay 12 unoperated. If the current of photo-cell 10 which is gas filled varies linearly with anode potential the resistors may be so chosen as to make the apparatus independent of voltage fluctuations. Further amplifying stages may be added; for example, a thyratron may have its grid connected to the anode of valve 8, coil 12 being replaced by a resistor and the coil inserted in the thyratron anode circuit.
