Abstract

707,834. Turning; filing. MARBAIX, G. E. H. (Nash Co., J. M.). July 24, 1952 [May 26, 1952], No. 13325/52. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A machine for finishing circular components comprises a number of rotary work-carrying spindles 12 spaced circularly on a table 2 which is rotatable about a vertical axis, a plate 9 rotatable with the table, and a number of clamping spindles 22 which are carried by the plate 9 and are each provided with a freely-rotatable pad 32 between which and the co-operating end of a spindle 12 a component is clamped while it is located in or passing through the working zone or arc. The table 2 is disposed in a circular opening provided between a table 6 carrying the tooling units, and a table 7 which is removable to give access to the driving mechanism enclosed within a supporting casing 8. The table 2 is carried on a shaft 1 driven from a motor 11 through belt-and-pulley mechanism 4 and worm gearing 5 arranged to permit adjustment of driving speed and stop the drive in the case of jamming occuring. The spindles 12 are mounted on bearings in the table 2 and carry pulleys 16 at their lower ends for engaging one or more endless belts 15 driven by a motor 19; only when the spindles are moving through the working arc, i.e. adjacent the table 6, do the belts 15 engage the pulleys 16 and therefore drive the spindles, and a spring-urged brake 36 is applied to each spindle as it moves out of this zone. The plate 9 is supported on the shaft 1 above the table 2 for vertical adjustment by rack-andpinion gearing 10 and each of the clamping spindles 22 carried by it is disposed immediately above one of the work spindles 12. Each work piece to be finished is gripped between a pad 33 non-rotatable on a spindle 12 and the freelyrotatable pad 32 on the corresponding spindle 22, the latter being urged downwardly by a spring 23 into clamping engagement while the spindle passes through the working arc but raised when out of this arc by a cam 25 engaging a disc 24 on the upper end of the spindle. Upon leaving the working units the components are removed by an ejection arm 55 and pass to a shoot 56. The tooling units may consist of files 38, grooving cutters, knurling rolls or buffing pads mounted in arcuate slots 34 in the table 6 and held up to the work by springs. Motor-driven tooling units, such as abrasive bands, grinding wheels, trimming knives or rotatable grooving cutters may be mounted in holes 35 in the table 6. In a modification, a dwell may be provided at each tooling station, the spindle being moved to the station rapidly or slowly, or rapidly until near the station and then slowly. In such an arrangement, rotation of the table is effected by the co-operation of a ratchet wheel 40, Fig. 4, on the shaft 1 with a spring-urged pawl 41 on a lever 46 centred on the shaft 1. The lever is actuated by the piston rod 42 of a pivotallymounted pressure fluid cylinder 43, and a second pivotally-mounted pressure fluid cylinder has its piston rod connected with the piston rod 42 by a cross-head 50 for controlling the two pistons. The flow of fluid to the second cylinder is controlled by valves or other means actuated by electrical controls set to provide the desired movement of the spindles. In a further modification, the table 2 may be rotated continuously with a reduction of speed while each spindle passes a tooling unit.
