Abstract
Tetra-alkyl lead is prepared by reacting an alloy of lead with an alkyl halide or sulphate at an elevated temperature, characterized by using a sodium-lead alloy in the form of flakes having at least one surface comprising predominantly the projecting natural faces of identifiable octahedral crystals projecting from a common base. The alloy is preferably a monosodium lead alloy in the form of flakes of from 0.01 to 0.05 inches mean thickness (although a mean thickness from about 0.008 to about 0.12 inches is satisfactory) and 1/8 to 1/4 inch in maximum dimension. The reaction may be carried out at a temperature in the range of 70 DEG to 100 DEG C., and the reaction period may be between 5 and 30 minutes. A liquid alkyl halide may be used in excess for the reaction. The axial dimensions of the identifiable crystals of the sodium-lead alloy used may be from 10 to 50 per cent of the arithmetic mean thickness of the flake. A suitable method for preparing the alloy is given in Specification 707,074. Catalysts or accelerators normally used in tetra-alkyl lead formation can be used in the above process, e.g. anhydrides of carboxylic acids, non-quinoidal ketones such as acetone, esters of carboxylic acids, amides, acetals and aliphatic aldehydes. Other lead-sodium alloys apart from monosodium lead alloy which may be used are of the composition Na2Pb, Na9Pb4 and Na4Pb. Alkyl halides or sulphates which may be used are methyl chloride and bromide, ethyl chloride, bromide and iodide, isopropyl bromide and diethyl sulphate. A number of examples are given.
