706,876. Oil seals. ROULEMENTS A. BILLES MINIATURES SOC. ANON. Jan. 2, 1952 [Jan. 6,1951], No. 135/52. Class 122(5) A sealing device for a ball or roller bearing .comprises an annular elastic diaphragm 5 tightly secured at its outer peripheral portion to the outer ball race 1 by cover means which exerts a radially outward tension on the diaphragm which. extends freely and unsupported from a boss 4b on the cover means into sealing contact at its inner peripheral portion with an annular surface 2a formed on the inner ball race 2 and axially offset from the boss 4b. A gasket 3 is held against the shoulder formed by a recess 7 in the outer race 1 and the diaphragm 5 is clamped at its outer marginal portion between an inner cover 4 and an outer cover 6 by sloping segments 6b on the rim of the outer cover which press against the cylindrical wall of the recess 7 when the outer cover is forced therein. The outer marginal portions of the inner and outer covers are dished so that when the diaphragm is clamped therebetween it is subjected to an outwardly acting radial tension and flexed to urge its inner marginal portion into contact with the surface 2a. The inner cover 4 has a cylindrical portion 4a that extends at its inner end into close proximity at 12 to the inner race 2. In a modification the diaphragm is clamped against a cylindrical portion only of the outer marginal portion of the inner cover. In another modification an intermediate cover plate is provided between the diaphragm and the outer cover. In a further modification (Fig. 8) the gasket 3 is omitted and the outer diameter of the diaphragm 35 is such that in addition to being clamped between the inner and outer covers 34, 36 the diaphragm is held in contact with the cylindrical wall of the recess 7 by the segments 366, In a still further modification the inner cover and recess 7 are also omitted and the outer marginal portion of the diaphragm is clamped against the bore of the outer race by the outer cover which has a flat rim that fits in a shallow recess in the outer race.
