Abstract
Fibrous plant material is retted by treating it at atmospheric temperature with a 2-8 per cent. by weight aqueous solution of an inorganic salt (other than a phosphate) of an alkali metal or of an alkaline earth metal, the salt being substantially neutral to phenolphthalein. The salt may be a bicarbonate of an alkali metal, e.g. sodium bicarbonate; or the sulphate of magnesium, sodium or potassium, or the chloride or nitrate of sodium, potassium or calcium. If the inorganic salt is a salt other than a bicarbonate, the solution may advantageously contain up to 0.75 gm. HCl per litre, to increase the rapidity of retting. In an example, ramie stalks are immersed in a 3 per cent. aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate or magnesium sulphate at room temperature for about 48 hours. Field-dried flax or hemp may be similarly retted in 48 hours. Specification 706,699 is referred to.
