Abstract
706,609. Fork lift trucks. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 8, 1952, No. 22496/52. Class 78 (3) [Also in Group XXXIV] In a pedestrian controlled fork lift truck the fork and guide assembly is tilted rearwardly by raising the complete chassis on a pair of pivoted arms 26 which carry the traction wheels 35. The arms 26 which are connected together by a bar 27 are journalled on the half shaft 39 extending from a differential gear unit (not shown), and a hydraulic thrustor 71 pivots the arms to extend or retract the wheels 35 relative to truck chassis. Each half shaft is splined to a sprocket 40 connected, by a chain 43, to a sprocket 34 rotatable with the associated wheel. The rotatable differential housing is secured to a driving sprocket 46 which is connected by a chain 45 to a sprocket 44 on the traction motor shaft; thus the drive to the wheels 35 is maintained in all positions of the arms 26. Switches 16 on the steering handle 14 control the traction motor, and motors driving the hydraulic pumps (not shown) which actuate the thrustor 71 and other thrustors (not shown) which effect movement of the guides 21 on the guides 20 and movement of the fork 23 on the guides 21. A valve 19 operated by a handle 18 controls the flow of fluid to the thrustor 71. The traction wheels are braked (see Group XXXIV) by a pair of brake shoes (not shown) which are arranged around the rotatable differential housing and are normally spring urged out of contact therewith, but which, when handle 14 is raised and a lever 58 is depressed, are engaged with the housing by a linkwork (not shown).
