Abstract

A fine pigmentary material is prepared by reacting kaolin or kaolinitic clay, in both of which the content of Al2o3 is less than 40 per cent., in a finely divided state at a temperature of at least 120 DEG C. with an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali containing by weight an amount of alkali metal hydroxide less than the weight of clay or kaolin but at least 25 per cent. of the clay or kaolin. Preferable features are the use of a suspension of the kaolin or clay; a temperature range of 130-200 DEG C.; 0.25-0.5 parts by weight of alkali metal hydroxide per part of clay or kaolin; and agitation during heating. The product is substantially free of kaolinitic plate structure and the particle size is less than 0.5 microns in maximum dimension. The product may be used to give a rubber composition having at least twice the tear resistance of a composition in which the original clay or kaolin is incorporated.
