Abstract

A therapeutic composition comprises a mixture of an antibiotic from the group consisting of penicillin G, chlortetracycline also known as aureomycin, oxytetracycline, also known as terramycin, chloramphenicol, and their salts and esters and at least one ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, in which the alcohol of the ester is benzyl or 1 to 7 alkyl, the weight ratio of the antibiotic to ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid being between 21 to 1, and preferably 8 to 1, and 1 to 1. According to examples (a) an aureomycin lozenge contains aureomycin hydrochloride, a mixture of methyl and propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, oil of peppermint and a lozenge base; (b) a vaginal dusting powder contains aureomycin hydrochloride, a mixture of methyl and propyl p-hydroxybenzoates and talc; (c) capsules contain aureomycin hydrochloride and methyl p-hydroxybenzoate as such, or with the further addition of the propyl ester; (d) suppositories contain white beeswax, paraffin wax, anhydrous lanolin, cetyl alcohol, mineral oil, aureomycin hydrochloride and a mixture of methyl and propyl p-hydroxybenzoate; (e) a vaginal ointment contains glyceryl monostearate, lanolin, ceresin wax, white petrolatum, mineral oil, aureomycin hydrochloride and benzyl-p-hydroxybenzoate; (f) vaginal tablets contain aureomycin hydrochloride, sucrose, mineral oil, acacia, yellow dye and a mixture of methyl and propyl p-hydroxybenzoate; (g) the aureomycin of lozenge (a) is replaced by sodium penicillin, terramycin hydrochloride or chloramphenicol. The antibiotics may be used in other therapeutic forms, e.g. penicillin as the procaine, potassium, or cyclohexylguanylurea salt.
