Abstract
Insulating coatings are formed on laminae of magnetic ferrous alloys by treating them with an accelerated aqueous solution of a dihydrogen phosphate, the accelerator being a chlorate or a mixture of a chlorate and a nitrate, the proportions being such that the ratio (chlorate and nitrate): phosphate lies between 0.1 and 0.6. Treatment may be by immersion, spraying or flooding, e.g. at 170 DEG F. and the coated laminae may be baked, e.g. at 250 DEG F. and subsequently treated with a solution containing hexavalent chromium. The coatings may be used as basis for the application of other finishes.
