Abstract

Lamellar pigments of ductile material are made by dispersing fragments of the material in a liquid vehicle and introducing the resultant slurry into a roller mill (see Group II) in which it flows repeatedly between surfaces resiliently pressed together in rolling and non-rubbing contact. Suitable materials are aluminium, copper alloys, ferrous metals, stainless steel, lead, precious metals and thermoplastic resins such as polythene. The vehicle for metallic fragments may be benzene, toluene, white spirit or kerosene mixed with colza or castor oil or tallow, lanolin or beeswax. Wetting agents such as triethanolamine or arylethylsulphonates or stearic acid may be added. Polythene may be dispersed in aqueous emulsions of fats. The slurry may be recycled through the roller mill or may be fed through a series of mills in which the rollers have progressively smaller diameters. In an aluminium pigment made by the process in which the average diameter of the flakes is D and the thickness e , the ratio D 2/e exceeds 500 and the covering power is greater than 18,000 sq. cm. per gram.
