May 21, 1952 [May 26, 1951], No 12815/52. Class 40 (3) In a machine for spraying hides, a carriage on which are mounted a light projector and photoelectric cell is reciprocated traversely of a conveyer on which the hides are carried so as to control the operation of a spraying head, which is also mounted on the conveyer. As shown, the conveyer consists of an endless belt 1 formed of wire gauze, or of sets of bars or articulated frames. The conveyer is driven by a motor 3 through a chain and pulley arrangement and the motor also reciprocates the carriage 10 through a chain 17, bevel gearing 14 and a further chain, not shown, which passes over sprockets at opposite ends of the carriage. The light source 23, photo-cell 24, and spraying head 19 are carried by a vertical member which carries ball races running against a fixed guide and a vertical slot with which a pin carried by the chain coacts to reciprocate the carriage. When no hide is in position the light beam is reflected from a mirror 25 running the full width of the conveyer and received by a photo-electric cell which through a relay and electromagnetic valve mechanism cuts off the air and colour supply to the spraying head. When the hide is in position the spray is switched on. The spray falls on the hide slightly before and leaves it slightly after, the light beam. Air enters a shroud 7 inside which the spraying takes place, through a pipe 29 near the mirror 25 and is withdrawn through a tube 30. Thus the deposition of colour on the mirror is prevented.
