Abstract
A sintered hard metal insert for percussive drills consists of at least 85 per cent. of tungsten carbide or tungsten carbide and molybenum carbide, 6-10 per cent. of an auxiliary metal or alloy, e.g. iron, nickel, cobalt, copper or silver, and up to 5 per cent. of one or more further carbides or nitrides, silicides, borides, or diamond, the hard particles having a mean grain size of 2.4-6m determined on polished and etched sections. When cobalt is used as the auxiliary metal, the larger the grain size of the hard particles the lower the cobalt content may be.
