Abstract

705,600. Vices ; work benches. CLARKE, T. A. Feb. 27, 1952 [Feb. 28, 1951 ; May 9, 1951], Nos. 4830/51 and 10876/51. Class 61 In a treadle operated vice the movable jaw 11 is advanced towards the adjustably fixed jaw 10 by means of an intermediate J- or L- shaped lever 17 having a shorter arm adapted to thrust against the movable jaw and a longer arm connected through a pivoted link 21 to the foot-operated lever 22 the movable jaw being automatically returned by a compression spring provided between the jaws. The base 12 of the vice is mounted on a portable stand which may comprise an oblong box to serve for transport of the vice and a set of tools. The lever 17 is pivoted to the base at 18, the free end of the shorter arm 16 carrying a roller 14 accommodated in a recess in the underside of the movable jaw 11. The foot lever 22 is pivoted to the side of the box and has at its free end a pedal 24 pressure on which causes the link 21 to be drawn down and the roller 14 to bear against the jaw 11. The pedal 24 is retained in operative position by a spring-pressed pawl 31 mounted on thelever 22 and adapted to ride over a ratchet toothed quadrant 32 mounted on the side of the box, a releasing trigger 33 being provided. Additional pressure for fine adjustment is imparted to the longer arm of the lever 17 by a screw-threaded rod 34 mounted in the base of the vice. Stops 26 limit the closing movement of the jaws. The jaw 10 is held in adjusted position by bolts 27 which pass upwardly through slots in the base and are secured by nuts. In a modification the jaw 10 is adjusted by a spring plunger carrying a toothed block adapted for engagement with a toothed bar on the under side of the base. In another modification, Fig. 3, the jaw 10 has hooked flanges engaging beneath the edges of the base and is held in adjusted position by a wedge 47 slidable on the base 12 and pressed forwardly by a spring 50. A number of balls or rollers carried in a recess 48 in the wedge engage a hardened steel plate secured to the jaw. The clamping pressure is released by a spring plunger 51 having a tapered end which when depressed engages an inclined wall 53 at the back of the wedge. A compression spring 42 held between the bottom of the jaw 11 and a cup 43 secured to the base, returns the jaw 11.
