Abstract

705,363. Gas turbine plant; elastic-fluid turbines. SOC. IN NOME COLLETTTVO CICHERO E SOMMARIVA-TURBINE CISO. Aug. 29, 1949 [Sept. 3, 1948], No. 22418/49. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XII] In a gas turbine plant comprising co-axially mounted contra - rotating turbine rotors 8, 9, Fig. 1, the turbine has no stationary blades or nozzle vanes but rotatable distributing blades or nozzles and rotatable reception blades and an air-preheating and combustion system disposed about the turbine casing 1 for part or a substantial part of its circumference. Part of the air delivered by the compressor 10 is supplied to the combustion chamber 30 whilst the remainder is mixed in chambers 35, 37, 38 with the combustion products and fed to the turbine, the exhaust gases being discharged through a pipe 25 to an air preheating chamber 27. Fuel and lubricating pumps are driven off the output shaft 3 through a worm and wheel unit 20 and gearing as shown. In a modification, Fig. 2, the turbine comprises rotors 61, 62, 63 respectively mounted on solid shafts 66, 65 and a hollow shaft 66 whilst the compressor comprises contra-rotating rotors 67, 68 mounted on the shafts 65, 66 respectively. The rotor 62 has two sets of distributing nozzles which deflect the combustion gases onto the rotors 61, 63, the exhaust gases from which pass into a common duct 82. In the above embodiments starting is effected by an electric motor such as 79<SP>1</SP> or by compressed air fed, for example, through a pipe 83 from a tank which is recharged by the compressor of the plant. The plant may be operated by liquid fuel or by coal dust. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a modified arrangement of Fig. 1 wherein the turbine compressor unit shown is replaced by a turbine-compressor unit as shown in Fig. 2, This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
