Abstract

705,354. Pipe couplings. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 10, 1952 [June 22,1951], No. 14622/52. Class 99 (1). A sleeve 18 receives in fluid-tight engagement nipples 10, 11 attached to the ends of fluid pipe lines and provided with poppet valves 15, e.g. spring-loaded ball valves, which are opened and closed by a cam 35 mounted on a shaft 38 extending through the sleeve and rotated by a handle 40. The cam has a width less than and a length greater than the spacing between the valves. There may be a sleeve 22 slidable on the sleeve 18 and having shoulders 23, 25 engaging behind shoulders 24, 26 of the nipples, one end of the sleeve 22 being formed with a number of spring fingers 28 moved radially into and out of engagement with the shoulder 26 of the nipple 11 by an outer sleeve 30 slidable on the sleeve 22. The co-operating sealing surfaces of the sleeve 18 and the nipples 10, 11 may be such that the cam 35, when in the valve-opening position, is disengaged from the valves before the nipples are entirely separated from the sleeve. To prevent excessive strain on the pipe lines, e.g. between a tractor and a towed implement, automatic disconnection of the coupling can be provided by connecting, e.g. by a wire, a handle of the sleeve 30 to an abutment on the tractor so that the wire tightens before the pipe line and thereby provides the necessary tension to pull the sleeve 30 into the releasing position.
