Abstract

704,819. Hose pipes. DARLING, R. E. Dec. 27, 1951 [Sept. 24, 1951], No. 30222/51. Class 99 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] A soft vulcanised rubber hose, e:g. for oxygen-breathing apparatus, comprises inner and outer preformed tubes coalesced under external pressure, and a continuous external helical rib 11 in which is embedded a steel reinforcing spring 5. An electrical conductor 15 may be wound between the convolutions of the spring, and a sheet of fabric material, or helically wound tape, may be disposed over the spring. There may be an interior lining of cured and less plastic material than that of the hose structure. The hose may be formed by, slipping the spring 5 over an uncured tube coated with rubber cement and disposed on a mandrel, and then passing over the assembly a second uncured tube, after which the mandrel is placed in a lathe-like flexible machine and rotated while a tensioned member, e.g. a rope, is wound round the hose and in the groove between the convolutions of rib 11 to coalesce the tubes. To facilitate assembly of the outer tube the tube is mounted on a carrier and expanded by applying a vacuum to an annular space around the tube, the vacuum being released when the tube is in position.
