704,289. Reciprocating pumps. SOC. L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC. ANON. POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES G. CLAUDE. Jan. 7, 1952 [Jan. 9, 1951], No. 493/52. Class 102 (1). In a pumping plant for liquefied gases, the pump 3 has an enclosed chamber 2 surrounding its cylinder so that the inlet ports 8 are immersed in the liquefied gas and the chamber 2 is connected by a pipe 13 to the liquid outlet 4. of the tank 1 and also by a pipe 6 to the upper part or gas phase of the tank 1; the pipe 6 enters the chamber 2 at a point 7 above the level of the ports 8. The pipes 6, 13 have branch pipes to the atmosphere controlled by valves 14, 15 respectively. By opening valves 11, 15, gaseous oxygen may be passed to cool .the pump and by opening valves 11, 12, the chamber 2 may be filled with liquid to the level 7. At the end of pumping, opening of valve 12 enables the expansion of the gas in chamber 2 to force the liquid back to tank 1. By opening valves 14, 15 hot gas may be blown through chamber 2 to defrost the pump.
