Abstract
704,032. Stuffing-boxes. MASCHINENFABRIK BURCKHARDT AKT.-GES. Oct. 12, 1951 [Oct. 12, 1950], No. 23830/51. Class 122 (5) In an arrangement for sub-dividing the pressure drop in multiple packings for piston rods a lubricant is fed to at least some of the intervals separating the packings under pressures of values forming a progression gradually decreasing from the piston cylinder to the outside. A compressor piston 2 is sealed by a series of axially spaced packing rings 5 the intervals between which are fed by pumps 6 with lubricant at pressures predetermined by manual adjustment of safety valves 7. In a modification the pumps 6 are replaced by a common pump. In another modification the pumps 6 and safety valves 7 are replaced by pumps having plungers operated by pistons of different diameters subject to fluid pressure from a common line. In yet another modification the safety valves 7 are replaced by differential piston valves hydraulically controlled from a common pipe that may be connected either to the delivery pipe 4 or the cylinder chamber 16 of the compressor.
