Abstract
Iron powder of a grain size below 100 mesh is produced by treating finely divided iron ore of a grain size below 100 mesh, and not exceeding that of the desired final powder, with a solid or gaseous reducing agent at a temperature to form sintered sponge iron cakes which, after cooling, are comminuted to the desired grain size. The ore, e.g. magnetite, crushed to pass a 100 mesh sieve, may be a concentrate and may be reduced by carbon at 1000 DEG C. The loss, i.e. powdered iron failing to pass 100 mesh is stated to be about 2.5 per cent.
