Abstract
703,796. Grinding and polishing. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. Oct. 23, 1952 [Oct. 23, 1951], No. 24790/51. Class 60 A method of abrading an article 12 with a single-curvature convex surface, e.g., a turbine or compressor blade for gas turbine engines, comprises applying the article simultaneously to a plurality of abrasive members 7, 8 which move laterally of the convex surface and engage the surface each along separate surface generating lines thereof and moving the article 12 to transfer the abrasive action of the members 7, 8 to successive surface generating lines. In Figs. 1 and 2, members 7 are narrow abrading bands passing round pulleys 9, 10 and members 8 are narrow abrading bands passing round pulleys 10, 11 ; those surfaces of one set of bands which are engaged by the blade move inwardly towards the throat 13 and those of the other set of bands outwardly away from the throat. The pulleys may be adjustable so as to adjust the angle between the two sets of bands. The blade is rotated, preferably manually, about the axis 14 and simultaneously moved lengthwise to ensure that the entire convex surface of the article is worked upon. The two sets of bands 17, 18, Fig. 3, may pass round pairs of pulleys 19, 20 and 21, 22 ; the bands preferably move inwardly towards the throat. The endless bands may be replaced by polishing discs, grinding wheels or a combination of grinding discs, wheels and endless bands.
