Abstract
In the production of finely divided metal oxides by decomposing volatile, anhydrous metal chlorides with oxygen at high temperatures with the formation of flames, a suspension of finely divided particles of the chloride, which may be solid or liquid, in an oxygen-containing gas is supplied to a reaction chamber, and therein contacted with an independently-burning auxiliary flame sustained by a separate inflow of combustible gas, at least part of the oxygen necessary for maintaining the auxiliary flame being supplied separately from the reaction mixture, so as to volatilize the chloride particles and to ignite the resulting gaseous mixture and to maintain it in a flaming state. The suspension is produced by atomizing a liquid chloride by oxygen-containing gases, or by introducing powdered solid material in the gas stream. The production of oxides of chromium, iron, titanium, zirconium and niobium is mentioned. Combustible gases which may be used are hydrogen, carbon monoxide, coke oven gas and carburetted hydrogen gases. The auxiliary flame suitably burns around the stream of the suspended particles, and the methods otherwise described in Specification 661,685 apply.
