Abstract

Copolymers are obtained by polymerization of a mixture comprising (a) 92 per cent. to 96 per cent. of vinylidene chloride (b) 7 3/4 to 2 per cent. of one or a mixture of any two or all three of methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and ethyl acrylate and (c) one or more of itaconic or citraconic acid or anhydride, or mesaconic acid, the proportions being selected to total 100 per cent. (c) May be a mixture of acidic anhydrides, including citraconic and itaconic anhydrides, obtained from citric acid by distillation. The copolymer may be made by an emulsion polymerization process, dispersing agents specified being condensation products of formaldehyde with a naphthalene sulphonic acid or an alkyl substituted naphthalene sulphonic acid or alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof. The catalyst may be ammonium persulphate activated by sodium metabisulphite. The copolymer dispersion may be acidified to a pH of 1-4 and used in the production of moisture proof films (see Group VIII).
