Abstract
701,606. Berthing ships. TAPP, E. T. J., and TAPP, P. J. R. Aug. 18,-1952 [May 18, 1951], No. 11725/51. Class 114 In an apparatus for berthing vessels a number of wheels or endless tracks are arranged during berthing to be disposed between the sides of the vessel and of a pier, lock, quayside, embankment or the like and means are provided for driving at least one of the wheels or endless tracks. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 four wheels 10 are mounted on the vessel 11 to engage the walls 23. A fluid pressure system 17, 18, 19, 20 having a compressor 21 driven by the engine 22 of the vessel supplies fluid under pressure to a reciprocable ram 16 to which is connected a chain 14 mounted on sprocket wheels 12 for driving the wheels 10 through a ratchet mechanism. A brake mechanism is associated with the wheels. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the wheels 10 are mounted on opposite sides of a two-walled pier 26 on lever arms 28 having means for effecting and equalizing, swinging movement of the arms. A motor is mounted on each arm to drive its wheel through a suitable transmission.
