Abstract

Low density bricks or aggregate for concrete are produced from carboniferous material of aluminiferous or slaty constitution and containing both carbonaceous fuel and volatile constituents with or without the addition of fuel by subjecting them to an air draught sintering. Specified materials are residues from the carbonisation of aluminiferous oil shale, intermediate products or washing slag from the dressing of pit coal, inferior coal or coal containing washery slag, slaty overburden from opencast mining of brown coal, carbonisation residues from brown coals, and slate quarry waste. Additional fuels specified are cinder or coal dust from locomotives, carbon containing flue ash, brown coal waste or coke waste, singly or in admixture. Admixtures for strength are fine sand or lime. The sintered product may be cut into blocks and serve as insulating bricks, or it may be crushed, graded and mixed with cement to form porous concrete articles.
