Abstract
Closed - cell cellular thermoplastic masses of e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or cellulose acetate are made by dissolving gases in the hot mass under high pressure in a closed mould, heating the mass until it gelatinizes, reducing the pressure whilst preventing escape of material to obtain a 1/5 to 2/5 increase in volume, then cooling the mass and finally completely relieving the pressure. Final expansion of the mass is obtained by reheating without pressure. The gas may be forced into the powdered thermoplastic material or a blowing agent such as azoisobutyric dinitrile may be incorporated in it. The material may be confined in hermetically sealed mould having a movable upper die, the mould being placed between the heated platens of a hydraulic press. The die is raised to obtain the desired expansion. Alternatively, a rigid mould or autoclave partly filled with the thermoplastic material and partly filled with an inert gas, such as nitrogen, under pressure, is used. Pressure is relieved to produce the desired expansion by allowing some of the inert gas to escape. Specification 527,951 and 578,513 are referred to.ALSO:Closed cell cellular thermoplastic masses of, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene or cellulose acetate, are made by dissolving gases in the hot mass under high pressure in a closed mould, heating the mass until it gelatinizes, reducing the pressure whilst preventing escape of material to obtain a 1/5 to 2/5 increase in volume, then cooling the mass and finally completely relieving the pressure.
