Abstract
700,912. Separating solid materials. CRAYMER, H. J. Sept. 4, 1951 [July 25, 1950], No. 18577/50. Class 117 [Also in Groups XVIII and XXX] An apparatus for grading potatoes according to size and separating them from stones, comprises two sets of endless belts 5, 5a which pass around frusto-conical pulleys 4 to define a V shaped trough having a divergent aperture 6 in its base, and a series of resilient strips 15 down which potatoes and stones roll after being deposited on a plate 14 at positions dependent upon their size, the stiffness of the strips being such that they remain rigid only when guiding a potato into the container 19 or 20, but flex under the weight of a stone so diverting it into a container 21. The ungraded potatoes are first deposited in a shoot 11, and are then moved along the trough by the belts 5, 5a on manual rotation of the drive pulleys 4. The device is stated to be suitable for sorting articles other than potatoes and stones and in a modification, the strips 15 are non resilient but are connected with the plate 14 by springs.
