Abstract

700,855. Making pipe fittings. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1951 [Sept. 18, 1950], No. 22866/50. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) A method of forming a branched pipe fitting from a substantially tubular blank comprises positioning said blank in a die cavity having at least one branch cavity, applying endwise pressure to said blank and at the same time continuously applying, from an external liquid source, high hydraulic pressure to the interior of the blank whereby part of said blank is extruded into the branch cavity to form a branch portion and continuously supporting the end of said branch throughout the forming operation. A tubular blank 1 is placed in a cavity 2 in a die block 3 and a pair of opposed plungers 4 and 4a are brought into contact with the blank. Hydraulic fluid is introduced into the blank through axial holes 7 and 7a in the plungers. As the compression load of the plungers is increased the hydraulic pressure deforms the blank so that part is forced into a second radial cavity 8 to form a branch portion 9 of the pipe fitting. The second cavity 8 houses a support member 10 slidably mounted therein and which provides a support for the end portion 11 of the branch 9 throughout the forming operation. The support member may be energized by a coil spring or by a second hydraulic system in association with the main hydraulic system. Alternatively, the support member may be mechanically controlled by the plungers 4 and 4a and adapted to retract as the plungers advance within the die. The head of the support member may be flat, concave or convex or any other shape according to the required shape of the branch end 11. In a further modification a cruciform branch fitting may be formed by utilizing two plungers and two support members or a T-shaped fitting may be formed from a cup-shaped blank utilizing one plunger in conjunction with two support members. Solid types of filler material may be used as well as liquid.
