Abstract
<PICT:0700234/III/1> Petroleum or fatty oils are bleached with solid adsorbent, first by passage through a mass of partially spent adsorbent and then by mixing with fresh adsorbent, the second stage being carried out at low pressure (e.g. 0.5-4 inches of mercury) and the adsorbent separated after the second stage being used as the partially spent adsorbent in a subsequent operation of the process. If desired, there may be a preliminary mixing with fresh adsorbent, and steam stripping at low pressure to separate air and moisture from both oil and adsorbent, before the contact with the partially spent adsorbent; the adsorbent used in this preliminary stage is filtered out by the passage of the oil through the mass of partially spent adsorbent in the first stage. Fatty oils mentioned are animal, vegetable and marine oils such as cottonseed, soyabean, peanut, corn, sunflower seed, sesame, coconut and palm oils and also fats such as lard and tallow. The solid adsorbent may be carbon black or a bleaching clay such as fullers earth. In Fig. 1, oil enters the upper portion of column C through pipe 4 and passes in counterflow to stripping steam from line 7. Steam and volatile matter is drawn off by vacuum system V, while oil is withdrawn through line 8, heated in heat exchanger E and heater H, and passed to one of filters F1, F2 and F3, containing a cake of partially spent adsorbent. The partially bleached oil is then fed through pipe 9 into heated mixer M where it is mixed with fresh adsorbent from supply tank S. The resulting slurry is passed through line 11 and sprayed into the lower portion of column C, where it is subjected to the action of stripping steam from line 7. The slurry is then passed through pipe 16 to one of filters F1, F2 and F3, where the adsorbent is separated from the oil, thus leaving a cake of partially spent adsorbent in the filter. Bleached oil is withdrawn through pipe 17. Apparatus is also described wherein centrifuges are employed instead of filters.
