Abstract

700,095. Educational appliances; books. DUNN, R. M. July 27, 1951 [May 4, 1950], No. 11072/50. Classes 16 and 146(2) A device for teaching letters, numerals and words, and applicable for teaching the blind, comprises a number of basic-shape building elements 1...6 to be fitted into letter- or numeral-shaped recesses or openings 8 in a form board 7. The elements, e.g. semi-circular of three different curvatures 1, 2, 3 and straight of three different lengths 4, 5, 6, may be of rectangular or other cross-section and may be coloured on one or both faces, or all over, in different colours, all like elements being of the same colour; they are an easy fit in the openings 8 and lie proud of the surface of the board 7. If the form board is recessed the bottoms of the recesses may be coloured, e.g. correspondingly to the elements 1...6 6 to be fitted therein. In the case of an apertured board a background 10 having coloured letters &c. corresponding to the openings 8 may be registered beneath the board 7 by bringing the edges into coincidence, by engaging pins 11 in holes 12 in the corners of the board 7, or by locating one part within a raised margin on the other part; in this case circumscribed letter portions may be supported by strips 9 in the board 7 or may be provided on the background 10. The alphabet and nine numerals may be accommodated on two large form boards, or small boards may be provided each carrying a word, e.g. illustrated by a picture; the small boards may be assembled to make sentences printed on guide cards, and may have co-operating projections and openings differing between each pair of boards to ensure assembly in the correct order. The boards may be made up into loose leaf or bound books to form sentences or stories and may be interleaved with sheets of pictures; transfers may be provided to be' applied by the user to the boards or sheets; a cover or one of the boards may form a shallow box for the elements 1...6. According to the Provisional Specification the shapes 8 may be formed or filled in by dots and dashes and the filling elements may be of only one basic shape, e.g. of different colours.
