Abstract
699,940. Mixing apuliances. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1951, [Nov. 17, 1950], No. 26110/51. Class 86 Plastic material is milled by passing it between a pair of intermeshing inclined vane-shaped rotors revolving at different speeds within a closed chamber of substantially figure-eight cross-section formed by a pair of intersecting cylinders, the material being continuously fed into one end of the chamber and interchanged from one rotor to the other through the intersection of the cylinders and moved axially towards a discharge at the opposite end of the chamber. In Figs. 1 and 2 a housing 10 has upper and lower chambers 15, 25, each comprising parallel; intersecting bores 12, 14, and each containing a pair of intermeshing rotors 22, 24 and 26; 28, respectively. An inlet 16 for plastic material opens into the chamber 15 and additional feed tubes 17, 18 for liquid ingredients open into the tube 16 and chamber 15, the chambers 15 and 25 communicate through an opening 32, and an outlet 33 leads from the chamber 25. Each rotor has a pair of longitudinally continuous blades a, b, and c, d, inclined at an acute angle to the axial plane of the rotor and the rotors are driven by gearing so that the rotors 22 and 26 rotate in the opposite direction to, and at twice the speed of, the rotors, 24 and 28 respectively. Material under treatment passes along the chambers from the inlet 16 to the outlet 33 and is subjected to the actions of compression, extrusion, stretching and shear, as first one side and then the other side of a faster rotor are opposed to and cooperate with one side of the intermeshing slower rotor. In a modification, Fig. 3, the upper chamber 15 has double-bladed rotors 42, 44, having threaded portions 47, 48 beneath the inlet 16 which cause positive feeding of the material through the machine, the pitch of the thread 48 on the slower rotor 44 being twice the pitch of the thread 47 on the faster rotor 42.
