699,337. Ventilating. AIR-SANA, ERDLUFTVERWERTUNG GES. March 13, 1952 [March 13, 1951], No. 6508/52. Class 137 [Also in Group VI] A plant for the purification of air utilizing the earth as a filter comprises one or more permeable chambers 1 sunk into the ground connected by a pipe system 6-8 to a reversible air supply unit 9-11 so that pure air may be sucked up from the earth or polluted air may be delivered into the ground. The plant shown has three cham. bers 1 each of which is open at the bottom, closed by an air tight cover 1<SP>1</SP> at the top and has perforated side walls consisting of burnt brick. When valves 12, in pipes 6, and valve 13 in pipe 7, regulated by rotary rods 12<SP>1</SP> and pull rod 13<SP>1</SP>, are in the full line positions air is sucked up by pumps 11 as shown by the full line arrows. On reversing the pump 11, which is driven by motor 9 through clutch 10, and turning the valves 12, 13 to the positions shown dotted, polluted air may be delivered into the earth through pipes 8, chambers 2, pipes 6 and chambers 1. The chambers 2 having impermeable walls enclose a filter, adsorption and absorption medium respectively such as filter gauze 3, an active carbon or humus earth 4, and a silica acid gel. 5. The chambers 2 may be made accessible for the recovery of chemical substances. A filter 16 in the inlet pipe 15 prevents blockage of the chambers 2 by smoke. Plates 14 arranged above the chambers 1 prevent the air arriving at the latter by the shortest route and an impermeable slab 17 providing a foundation for unit 9-11 covers the central chamber. In a modification the slab 17 covers all the chambers. The chambers 1 and 2 are sunk to the underground water level so that pure air obtained from the earth is humidified. In a modification the plant is built into artificially established, usually moisture containing, humus earth.
