Abstract
699,015. Knitting. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. March 21, 1951. [March 24, 1950] No. 7389/50. Class 74 (ii). The invention relates to a superposed cylinder machine having interchangeable yarn feeders 133 and a main knitting station M.K. and patterning means 3 for effecting their selective interchange at a small group of needles and provided with an auxiliary yarn feeder 21 and auxiliary knitting cams at a position A.K. spaced circumferentially from the main knitting station. Control mechanism 20 is provided for introducing and withdrawing the auxiliary feeder 21 during rotary knitting and for withdrawing it at the beginning of a pouch knitted by reciprocation and for rendering the auxiliary knitting cams inoperative when the auxiliary feeder is withdrawn. A seamless sock, as described in Specification 699,170, can be knitted having heel and toe pouches of non-ribbed fabric and a ribbed leg comprising spaced bands knitted of two distinct threads as a two start spiral and intervening bands knitted as a onestart spiral the region of the introduction and withdrawal of the various threads being confined to a few wales at the back of the leg. The patterning means 3 for the feeders at the main knitting station may be that described in Specifications 301,350 and 301,360, [both in Class 74 (ii)]. Means may be provided for shifting the region of the withdrawal of the auxiliary feeder 21 preparatory to the knitting of a pouch, and a second auxiliary feeder 22 may be provided for feeding a draw or separating thread to the needles. Thread trapping and severing mechanism is provided. Specification 400,623 also is referred to.
